I took my kids to the Katonah Museum of Art the other day. The
girls are 3.5 y/o (twins). It was a fine experience, and relates
to the thread, so I thought I'd bring it up.
The museum is basically two galleries, with a small outdoor
sculpture courtyard, a classroom and a shop. There weren't many
people there to see an exhibit called "The Figure Re-Constructed"
a selection of contemporary figurative works. Outside of one of
the galleries was a caveat suggesting that parents should have a
look before they bring their kids in. So we all plunged merrily
in, and boy were there lots of, in my kids words, "naked bottoms"
and "no pants boys and girls." Needless to say, this was a real
treat for them. They asked why no one was wearing pants, and I
said that alot of artists like to paint people with no clothes.
One kid asked me: "Like Matisse?" (they have a matisse book at
home) "Well, he usually painted people with clothes." Now the
kids are at home drawing bottoms.
Art is important! Art is fun! Art is silly! Particularly if there
are no-pants boys and girls. LOL
