Thanks to help last year on Museum L and some preliminary sluething by Bill
Stoneman at the Schied Library, we have attributed the majority of the
early 19th and late 18th century collection of plaster casts of engraved
gems to a German scholar Phillip Daniel Lippert and an Italian collector
Paoletti or by his firm. I've tried the bio data base to locate more info
on these gentlemen but no luck. Our Libraries are pretty thin on the
subject of the casts. Does anyone have any ideas on how to persue these
guys?
I would like to know if Gertrude Seidnmann from Oxford,or anyone from Spink
and Sons in London has access to Museum L as it would speed up our
communication. I also had heard that a Richard Doty was doing some work on
something similar and if he is connected I would love to hear from him.
Other wise I'm condemed to snail mail.
I also need to confirm Ms. Seidmann's address in Oxford, she wrote on
someone else's letterhead and that's the only address that I have for her.
These objects have significance in the development of early museums,
possibly in the desemination of classical knowlege to the masses. They are
very interesting and our museum has about 10,000 of Lippert's and maybe
100+ of Paoletti.
Thank all of you for your time in reading this.
