The results of my recent survey on capital campaigns at
museums represent responses from three institutions:

1. In your most recent capital campaign, how did your museum
count the campaign total?
(a) annual giving + campaign gifts (all gifts to the museum
during the campaign period) OR
(b) only gifts for campaign projects?

>b/ but I would do combined campaign, given the option -- the campaign
WILL impact annual giving!

>b is the way we counted gifts but also included gifts to
endowment which was part of the campaign.

>only construction-related gifts will be counted [this is a
"mini-campaign" to add space to a university art gallery; in
a previous university-wide campaign, all gifts during the
period were counted.]

2. Was government funding counted in the campaign
total? Were government grants part of the "quiet" phase and,
if so, were they publicized as "lead gifts?"

>Yes, yes, and yes, the City of San Jose's $39 million commitment to build
our building is usually listed separately, but our NSF grant
is included in the founders list at the appropriate level.

>Yes, but only as it related to the goals and objectives of
the campaign. Gov't grants were part of the quiet phase but
we chose to emphasize gifts from individuals and foundations
as our lead gifts.

3. How long was the campaign period from the beginning of the
quiet phase to close? Public phase to close?

>Founders Phase (lead gifts) 18 month; major gifts 18 months; public phase
1 year. Currently in major gifts phase.

>Quiet phase 18 mos. Public phase 20 mos. The campaign will
end this December and we are at $6.5 milion toward a $6.0
million goal.

My personal thanks to those proud few responding. I welcome
further discussion.
