A quick 3-question survey on capital campaigns at museums:
1. In your most recent capital campaign, how did your museum
count the campaign total?
(a) annual giving + campaign gifts (all gifts to the museum
during the campaign period) OR
(b) only gifts for campaign projects?
2. Was government funding counted in the campaign total?
Were government grants part of the "quiet" phase and, if so,
were they publicized as "lead gifts?"
3. How long was the campaign period from the beginning of the
quiet phase to close? Public phase to close?
The California Academy of Sciences, a natural history museum
in San Francisco, is preparing for a campaign. We are
curious whether the prevailing model for museum campaigns
differs from that for universities, where annual and campaign
gifts tend to be combined in the campaign goal. Since our
campaign may include multi-million dollar funding from the
City of San Francisco, we are also interested in how museums
have counted such gifts and timed them with private support
in pacing the campaign's public phase.
Your help is greatly appreciated. You may reply to me
directly. I will summarize the results to both lists.
