It may not be "high adventure" enough, but we're sponsoring, along
with the Peoria Wheelm'n (the local cycling club), the Peoria academy
of Science, and the Peoria Astronomical society, an Interplanetary
Bicycle Ride. This will be a two day affair, July 15/16, as riders
travel to Pluto and back the first day, and a shorter (4 billion
mile) trip sunday morning to Saturn and back. Miles are to scale
on our solar system model, currently the largest model of the solar
system in the world (see page 54, Guinness Book of Records, and page
42-45 of the March issue of Discover magazine). Riders scale speeds
will exceed the speed of light, so there may be some relativistic
implications - we're predicting that time will reverse and riders
will return younger than when they started. The two day mileage will
be about 125 miles, but riders of all levels can participate, picking
their planets. (from Jupiter to Saturn and back is about 10 miles).
We're billing it as "The longest and fastest ride in the Solar System"
Well, maybe it is high adventure?
