The AAMD's salary survey gives breakdowns of salary by job title, and it
gives alternate job titles based on what the job duties are. For example,
there is a Curator I position which would roughly correspond to what most
large museums call a Chief Curator, and a Curator II which would be a
curator for a specific area, time period, whatever.
The AAMD (Association of Art Museum Directors) has a home page--I have it
bookmarked but have to look up what the URL is.
P.S. I agree with Patrick's statement that in America everyone wants (or
their supervisor thinks they want) to be called Director of something. It's
certainly the case here--I got a title change to Director of Exhibitions and
Artist Services, but I'm still the exhibitions curator.
