DISASTER MANAGEMENT,
PRESERVATION AND THE LIBRARY

You are invited to attend a SEMINAR with John McIntyre
(Head of Preservation, National Library of Scotland)
and Jeavons Baillie (Chief Conservator, State Library of Victoria)

John McIntyre is involved in numerous national and international
preservation organisations including the
 International Council of Archives Disaster Prevention Committee
 and the The British Library National Preservation Advisory Committee.
 He co-wrote The Planning Manual for Disaster Control in Scottish Libraries
 and Record Offices which was used as a basis for the parallel publication
 by CAVAL (Aust.).  He is in Australia as the keynote speaker at the
conference Redefining Disasters: a decade of counter-disaster planning at the
 State Library of NSW.

Jeavons Baillie trained as a chemist and a conservator.
 He was employed for 18 years as the founding Conservation Officer
 at the National Library of New Zealand, during which time he oversaw
the collection's move to a new premises, providing the architectural and
engineering brief for all conservation-related matters.
 He worked at the Public Record Office (Vic) before taking up
 his present appointment.


The Program will include:

-An Introductory talk by John McIntyre,
 looking at the National Library of Scotland,
 and recent library preservation developments in the United Kingdom.
- A Presentation by Jeavons Baillie on disaster management
 in building design at the National Library of New Zealand,
 and an experimental approach to staff training for disaster response.
- An open discussion with the speakers and the audience.
 Some of the library preservation issues up for discussion could include
collection storage, disaster planning, preservation of electronic media and
 raising awareness of preservation issues.
- Tea and coffee will be served.
