There is a children's series which features the heroine, Cam Jensen.  One
of the stories involves a bone stolen from a natural history museum.  I
don't remember the title but a children's librarian at your local public

Sheryl's comment reminded me of a book I read as a child, don't remember the
title...but it was the story of two kids who run away and live in a museum.
 They solve a mystery about who carveda statue in the museum (think it was
Michalengo).

How's that for a vague lead?
