For a discussion of computerisation of records check out an article by
Nicholson  Baker in the New Yorker magazine last year some time.  It
is a wonderful exploration on the limitations of computer systems.
Although it refers to a traditional library setting, and no doubt
raised a few hackles in the library world, it is also relevant to
museums.

I'm afraid I don't have the exact reference - but maybe some kind
