We have just begun to use the black foam tape someone  mentioned
earlier and so far have been totally satisfied with the results. It's
much easier to removed and doesn't leave the adhesive and foam stuck
to the wall. We haven't been using it long enough to see the long term
effects though.

It's made by 3M, double-coated vinyl foam tape, closed cell, 1/16"
thick.  It's a bit more expensive than the white but you would save
that cost in labor.  A 1/2" x 36yd roll cost about  $26.00. I ordered
