Someone (no signature!! argghh) posted a very good and
thorough reply to the development office software question.
The only thing that I have to add is that Raiser's Edge has
been called that for several years. The company had an
unfortunate propensity for bad puns (witness the name of the
company itself, Blackbaud) It was all very amusing when
the company was very small and personalized, but it got
trying when they moved their offices down to South Carolina
          and became more corporate.

I hate to smear a company that may well have gotten its act
together, but in 1990 or so, they combined all the
disadvantages of being a small company with all the
inflexibility of a large corporation. They treated us, their
customers, poorly: what goes around, comes around, and I'm
just relating our bad experience with them.

Big money for "upgrades" that were just bug fixes, totally
inadequate training capabilities, and software that, while
          comprehensive, worked poorly.
