I thought Susan's Wageman's response was good, but want to add my
reservations about the use of "professional" in the sorts of context often
implied by things like applications forms. My preference when needing a
term to convey a sense of "highly experienced even if not formally trained"
is for the term PRACTITIONER. It cuts through the "paid vs unpaid" and
"professional vs amateur" dichotomies.
