With the advent of the Web browser, and tools like Photoshop, I don't think
there's any way you can maintain the security of images on the Web. We plan
on imprinting a copyright notice on the bottom of our images and trusting
that most people won't misuse them, however I'm using Photostyler to do it
so obviously anyone with a similar tool can undo it. Another approach is
to use a low-resolution image that would not reproduce well in a publication
etc., something in the 256 color range should suffice, although the quality
of the presentation of your web page will suffer. I have read somewhere
recently of a process that embeds a minute copyright symbol at the pixel
level into an image, this obviously only works if you catch someone using
your image and can gain access to the image on their computer.
