Lothar Witteborg's _Good Show! A Practical Guide for Temporary
Exhibitions_, originally developed to help people install SITES
(Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service) exhibits, states a
flat rule of "an average 5" 3" eye level" (page 7) but then goes on to
show many drawings illustrating many other possibilities, and identifying
a variety of factors to think about, when planning installation.

Wonderful illustrations of many European exhibits, with thoughtful
commentary on all sorts of installation issues, are to be found in
Margaret Hall's great book, _On Design_.
