CURATOR OF ANTHROPOLOGY
STATE HISTORICAL SOCIETY OF WISCONSIN
 
         LOCATION: The State Historical Museum in Madison, Wisconsin.
         Start between $28,121 and $32,339 annually; plus excellent
         benefits.  This position is included in the education
         bargaining unit.  JOB DUTIES: Primary responsibility for the
         acquisit ion, care, documentation and management of
         ethnographic and archaeological objec ts relating mainly to
         Native American cultures; coordinate compliance with the N
         ative American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act
         (NAGPRA); and participate in conceptualization and
         development of exhibits relating to Wisconsin historica l and
         cultural topics.
 
         NOTE: Well qualified candidates will have professional
         academic preparation typi cally acquired through an advanced
         degree in anthropology or closely related fie ld, and
         significant experience and responsibility in exhibit and
         collections cur ation duties in a museum environment.
 
         KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITIES SOUGHT: Expert knowledge of
         cultural anthropolog y, archaeology and Native American
         history; ability to identify and date ethnogr aphic
         artifacts; extensive knowledge of the legal and ethical
         issues regarding N AGPRA; broad background in American social
         and cultural history, especially mate rial culture; ability
         to use artifacts to interpret the past; knowledge and abil
         ity to implement museum educational and communications
         techniques; broad knowled ge of professional museum
         practices; knowledge of professional conservation and
         preservation practices; excellent oral, written and
         interpersonal communications skills.
