The following has been sent directly by Jettie van Lanschot to Chip
Lindsey. I have been asked by Jettie to forward it to MUSEUM-L. Jettie
has given up her subscription to MUSEUM-L due to the amount of incoming mail!

Subject: Re: Meteorite preservation help. (fwd)

Dear Chip Lindsey
There is an article which treats the conservation of iron meteorites in
particular.
Sj|gren,A. and Buchwald, V.F.: Hydrogen plasma reactions in a d.c. mode
for the conservation of iron meteorites and antiquities.
Studies in Conservation, 36 (1991) 161-171
You will need a plasma apparatus, but I know that they are building one
at the Smithsonian, although I do not know how far the project is.
The School of Conservation is working in the field of conservation of
archaeological iron and we are at this moment trying to build a plasma
apparatus, where we can hold the temperature low (i.e. below 150-200 oC)
and without making a connection to the object.
The near future will show how it is going to work.
I hope this can be of help for a start.
