The reason I didn't respond the first time is because I am a collections
manager in a fairly large museum and I thought you specified medium sized
museums. Our institution has a collections manager for each major collection,
ornithology, ichthyology, botany (vacant), vertebrate biology/paleontology,
malacology, invert. paleontology, entomology, exhibits, diatoms, and I've
probably forgotten one or two. The best analogy for collections managers
here is a librarian. We are responsible for all database management, the
physical well-being of the specimens, loan, visitors, questions from the
public, behind-the-scenes tours, and management of curatorial
assistants and volunteers.
I hope this is helpful. In a sense it might be redundant as I was one of
the respondants for Paisley Cato's survey.

ps. I hope this is in order once posted because my screen was disrupted by
a new mail message and was never restored properly-as I'm typing new stuff,
it's appearing in the middle of the text on my screen. My apologies if it's
scrambled.
