DESCRIPTION: Information Resources Specialist. This two-year,
fixed-term position is located in the Research and Instructional
Technologies Support group (RITS), within Stanford University
Libraries/Academic Information Resources (SUL/AIR). RITS provides
Stanford faculty and students with support for instruction and
research through technological services. The Information Resources
Specialist will provide discipline-specific technology support to
faculty within the Art Department. The IRS' primary purpose is to
develop faculty competence in the use of information resources in
teaching and research. The incumbent will report to the Academic
Technology Support Specialist in Research and Instructional
Technologies Support (RITS) within Stanford University
Libraries/Academic Information Resources (SUL/AIR). The IRS will be
located in the Art Department, Art Library, and Art Museum to assure
proximity and availability to faculty. In addition to working with
faculty in the Art Department, the IRS will devote twenty percent of
their effort to the central Academic Technology Support Service in
Meyer Library. There the IRS will assist the broader academic
community, via consulting and training, in using technology relevant
to the discipline that is his/her speciality. The IRS will act as a
technology liaison with the appropriate Stanford University
Libraries subject specialists and will work in collaboration with
appropriate campus technology support staff.
QUALIFICATIONS: The IRS must possess a working knowledge of art
history in order to promote and assist the faculty with the
discipline-specific educational and research tools available and
disseminate knowledge of these tools appropriately through the Art
Department and Museum. Baccalaureate and/or advanced degree in art
history, studio art, or design plus two years experience in the
academic computing field, or the equivalent combination of education
and experience. Strong client service orientation. Prefer
experience in providing academic computing assistance or consulting.
Knowledge of and experience with academic computing technologies and
applications, espec. those relating to manipulation and creation of
art imagery, e.g., Photoshop. Experience with campus computing
environments in relevant disciplines. Experience with computing in
a networked environment (DOS/Windows, Macintosh, UNIX, Internet).
Prefer awareness of technological environment at Stanford.
Excellent organizational, teaching, and communications skills.
Ability to communicate effectively and tactfully with the Stanford
academic community and with the SUL/AIR and ITSS staff (technical,
administrative, and managerial). This includes demonstrated ability
to work with faculty and to assist patrons whose technology
expertise ranges from naive to sophisticated. Record of innovation
and creativity in making technology accessible, understandable, and
appealing to an academic audience. Demonstrated resourcefulness in
identifying and exploiting a variety of campus and external
technology resources to meet department needs. Ability to learn and
apply complex procedures, combine high productivity with accuracy
and attention to detail, work independently after initial training
period, apply judgment and initiative toward solving problems, and
work with other staff as a team.
