This inquiry was posted several days ago in a decidely more technical
format (hyphenated techniques, chemical names, etc.), which I hope was
the cause of the somewhat less than encouraging number of responses
(actually zero) that I have received.
We are looking for information on a type of historic sporting equipment
recently sent for technical analysis. The item is a small racket about
the size of a table tennis racket, only with a longer and thinner
handle. The racket head is hollow and covered with parchment. Paint
damage suggests that it was at one time used to strike a small, blunt
object -- perhaps like a shuttlecock.
I have spoken with several kind people at the National Museum of
American History, and at Sotheby's which recently had a sale of antique
sporting equipment -- but to no avail.
If you have any suggestions on where we might look for comparative
information on design, materials, date, etc., please contact me.
TIA
