Maybe you could be a management/analyst at a museum? Seriously,
there are all kinds of non-curatorial, and even non-programmatic
jobs in museums. There are administrators, there are fundraisers,
there are PR people, operations people, etc. Obviously, there are
more of these at larger museums than small. And the sad truth is
that these folks often get better pay than the people on the
curatorial/educational side of things, since there is more
competition from the for profit sector (I have an MBA, and I
could, in theory, earn a bunch more in the for-profit sector, so
my pay in the nfp world is commensurately higher)
I ain't getting rich, but over the past 15 years, I've earned a
reasonable living in administrative and fundraising capacities in
museums large and small in NYC. I might enjoy the for profit
world too, though I've never really worked in it.
