A question for all registrar-types?
I am interested in receiving some feedback regarding collection moves. Our
museum is preparing to pack its 7000+ object collection (approx. 550
paintings, 250 furniture, 100 sculpture, 3000 works on paper, 3000 dec. arts
misc.) to move to a new facility about half a mile away. Although we are
hiring a conservator for a consultant, several individuals have pressed us
for detailed estimates on packing, shipping, and setup (in new storage and
galleries). We will open the new facility in mid-1997.
Needless to say, our estimates which have indicated about a year for packing
and a partial close-down of our existing site, have not pleased all members
involved (Why can't you move, re-inventory, store, and setup 20,000 square
feet of gallery space in one month?). Our curatorial staff currently
includes two registrars, one preparator, and two curators. Any feedback on
similar projects, their staffing, and timetables would be useful as
additional "validation" of our concerns for a safe move.
