The Royal Ontario Museum has an introductory exhibit that gives (I
thought) a good background on the hows and whys of the scientific research
that underlies all the rest of the exhibits in the museum. The Art
Institute of Chicago has an introductory area aimed at children, but was
the sort of thing I as an art novice have always wished for when visiting
an art museum.
