Museum Standards From MTI
The Museum Training Institute has developed standards of occupational
competence for museum professionals, standards which describe exactly
what is expected of an individual in order for them to be deemed
competent in any museum function. The project has taken several years
and has involved the work of hundreds of museum professionals from the
UK.
The production of these standards has opened up huge possibilities for
museum professionals. The standards can be used by museum
professionals to assess themselves against, to further define what is
expected of new employees, to develop training programmes, the list is
endless.
One use of the standards has been to produce qualifications. The
standards have been grouped into seven such qualifications aimed at
all front-line museum occupations. These qualifications can be
awarded by any museum that is able to meet a number of quality
criteria set by the Institute. Many museums or museum consortiums are
already delivering the qualifications and any museum interested should
contact the Institute for details.
The standards reflect the work of museum professionals in the real
world, and because the world is always changing the standards need to
be revised on a regular basis to ensure they continue to reflect the
work of museum professionals. Any feedback regarding the way museum
professionals are using the standards, their effectiveness, suggested
improvements or further information should be sent to:
