Yeah, I've never been to Epcot, but I was thinking that
scientific "theme parks" are less likely to be distorting,
particularly those that deal with the physical sciences and
technology. Though some might argue that glorifying the march of
technology is in itself a distortion, but that is a point about
which honest people may disagree (and dishonest people, like the
Unabomber).
By the way, I seem to have gotten up on the wrong side of the bed
this morning, and have been dashing off intemperate, hasty little
missives. So, let me get a bit more moderate...
I *like* museums and theme parks both, and I'm not too worried
about museums being dragged into the disney business. I am a
leettle bit more worried about people taking sanitized history a
la Disney as a fair representation. The reason this worries me is
not that I have some particular knowledge of history that
everyone should share, but because when utopians of any stripe
refer back to an earlier age as a model for our own, I seem to
find that they are referring to a distorted image of this earlier
age. Compared to this distorted image, today looks grimmer than
it needs to, and solutions to this grimness are more draconian
and less well informed.
On another topic on which I fired off a snide torpedo: Listen, if
you all want resumes posted up here, fine with me. Just put
RESUME as part of the title, and I'll know to delete. But
somehow I have a sense that a little teaser, like "I'm looking
for work and I have an extensive background in educational
technology, if you want my resume, email me privately." is better
form that posting the whole thing and *THEN* not signing the
message.
