>Assistant Curator

>DESCRIPTION
>Typical collection management and object handling work for historical
collections including accession, catalog, photograph, research, maintenance
and storage. Assistant Curator will work under the supervision of the Chief
Curator at Department Headquarters in Austin, Texas.
>
>HOURS and SALARY
>40 hours/week, Monday to Friday, approximate nine-month appointment
(December, 1995 through August 31, 1996).
>Hourly Salary Group XIII, S-2 ($10.59).
>
>QUALIFICATIONS
>Education Minimum: M.A. from an accredited college/university with major
coursework in museum studies, social sciences, material culture or related
field plus two years experience in collection management; or B.A. plus four
years experience in collection management.
>
>Knowledge: Basic office procedures and file management. General knowledge
of history of United States, costumes, furniture and decorative arts.
Working knowledge of collection management.
>
>Abilities: Must be able to travel, drive and obtain insurance. Must be
computer literate (prefer background in database management and
wordprocessing); keyboard minimum 40 wpm; must be patient, organized, have
attention to detail; must be able to work independently with minimal
supervision and as part of a team; must have leadership responsibility for
selected duties and projects.

>EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED
>File, sort and organize hardcopy records. Categorize costume, furniture
and decorative arts objects for computerized database entry utilizing
Chenhall's Nomenclature. Input records into computerized database. Check
and verify data entry. Photograph objects and installations for record
purposes. Maintain photo records. Inventory collections. Prepare
condition reports. Store objects. Mark objects. Basic and specialized
research.
