To Harry Needham:
I was the Director of the Lyman Allyn Art Museum in New London, CT, about 20
minutes away from the gigantic new Foxwoods casino built by the Mashantucket
Pequot Indians (the biggest casino in the Western Hemisphere). We observed
very little increase in traffic due to the casino's proximity, even though
30,000 people were visiting the latter daily. The assumption is that most
people interested in gambling are not interested in culture. I think you
could get better statistics by contacting the Mystic Seaport Museum through
Edward Baker.
