I recently completed an internship with NMAI in which I was evaluating
the desires of the Native community and how the museum has met these
desires (if at all), from a Native perspective. What I found is that
in some very specific Native communities that there have been possitive
responses, but that many others feel the museum has fallen short in
areas. However, I feel that perhaps in contacting the folks at NMAI, one
could get some good information on their experience in working with
Native Americans. I do know that many other institutions have been
able to succesfully develop exhibits and programming in close
collaboration with Native AMericans, yet I feel the programming is
the most difficult aspect of any attempt. I am please to see interest
in this topic, for we as Native peoples have long been seen as incapable
of contributing to the museum field.
