Michael McColgin recommends Ritzenthaler, Munoff and
Long's SAA publication on film archives. I certainly agree that it is
excellent, but would encourage institutions with nitrate film to explore two
additional publications:
Wilhelm, Henry. 1993. The Permanence and Care of Color Photographs:
Traditional and Digital Color Prints, Color Negatives, and Motion Pictures.
Preservation Publishing Company, Grinnell, Iowa (ISBN 0-911515-00-3). In
particular, Appendix 19.1, "Freezer Storage for Permanent Preservation of
Cellulose Nitrate Still-Camera Negatives and Motion Pictures.
National Fire Protection Association 40: Storage and Handling of Cellulose
Nitrate Motion Picture Film (NFPA 90-1994). Available from the NFPA,
1/800/593-6372, non-member cost $16.75.
Best wishes,
