Help, again, collegues:
Have any of you had experience with
"Mothballing" a museum collection? This means preparing for a period
of time (minimum 3 to 5 yrs and possibly more) when there would be no
full-time or perhaps even part-time oversight of a collection of over
50,000 items from a stuffed moose to documents and ephemera.
Unfortunately, this is in a University setting where maintenance
personnel are used to having fairly free access to almost anywhere. So
I would appreciate any and all tips, from physical security to
archiving of museum records.
Has anyone ever "Un-mothballed" and found problems that we could
avoid?? I will probably have more specific questions as time goes on,
but if anyone has ideas for starters, I would really appreciate hearing
from you. Part of this might be experience with mechanical or
electronic products for monitoring from offsite, including the
best-you-know-of motion detector systems, standing water sensors, etc.
Thanks a bunch...
