On 23 Feb. 1995, an upset Dan Miles wrote a harsh message about an
Environmental Defense Fund post he received.
Dan: The US is just a geographical expression for a part of the planet we
share. As things go, the legislative body for this geographic area and its
inhabitants is something of a trend-setter when it comes to a lot of things.
Environmental protection (or the lack of same depending on one's pov) is
one of these trendy areas. Sometimes we need to heed the saying "As the US
goes, so goes much of the rest of the world."
Believe it or not, a lot of us "USAnians" would be extremely interested, for
instance, if the Australian government was wrestling with issues pertaining
to the Great Barrier Reef, the duckbill platypus, Aboriginal art, the
country's educational infrastructure, etc.
The Internet is weird. It brings us all closer and in doing so, makes our
world virtually borderless. This isn't such a bad way of looking at things
once you get used to it. The best part of this whole Internet business is
the appreciation one develops for looking at the Earth as a total living
system. I think its called "Gaia." It's sort of the modern-day version of
Pangaea. (Or, is it Gondwanaland and Laurasia, you know how these
geographical expressions keep moving around.)
