Robbin Murphy's post of the announcement about the New-York Historical
Society deserves the attention of everyone on this list. A great library
and musuem is on the verge of being destroyed. But NYU is the hero here, not
the villain. The financil situation of N-YHS is so desperate that without
NYU,the Historical Society's magnificent library and special collections
will be broken up and their integrity and accesibility destroyed. The
situation of the Historical Society took 20 years of negelect and mis-
management by board and administration to create. Other, better alternatives
were available to N-YHS long ago, but it failed to take advantage of them.
NYU deserves the thanks of anyone who cares about the integrity of this
great collection. Without the intervention of NYU, the library of the
New-York Historical Society would literally be scattered to the highest
bidder.
