On the other hand, Bayla, I get the same response when I tell people I'm
a conservator. On more than one occasion I have described what I
do and the comment has been (because my specialty is textiles) "So, you
work with designers like Ralph Lauren and Calvin Klein?" The general
public -- i.e. my Aunt Sally; the students in history classes
I've taught; the doctor who lives in the apartment below me; my own self,
before I wandered into the discipline -- may not understand any of the
professional or skilled jobs that museum studies and administration
recognises as essential (or at least highly desirable). But how do you
educate a critical mass of this general public, and how important is it
to do so?
