A brief clarification, the exhibition, "The West as America" took place NOT
at the National Gallery of Art (which is only very loosely associated with
the Smithsonian Institution), but at the National Museum of American Art
(formerly the National Collection of Fine Arts and, before the Mellon
bequest, the National Gallery of Art).
(As to history being free of ideology, I think that's a bit wishful
thinking. It's my ideology or your ideology, and in the bets of all
possible worlds, it's our balanced ideology).
