The function of the Museum lab tends to be a bit different, with different Insti
tutions: some do not buy any art, hence no real auth. problems, so they deal mos
tly with technology and answering questions from conservation staff and curators
about objects and restorations and pigments and metals and binding media etc.,
Some labs, such as at the Met. or LACMA do quite a bit of authenticity work as w
ell as these other pursuits: some Museums of course have no scientific lab they
have a conservation dept. and some have a conservation dept with one scientist a
nd as you know some museums have no conservation dept either, and some of these
museums have 1,000,000's of objects: it is a confusing subject!
