African American Voices Initiative Project Curator, Contract
Maymont is a 100-acres historic estate and park, located in Richmond, Virginia, with many unique experiences for all to enjoy, including a historic mansion, The Robins Nature Center, arboretum, formal gardens, and habitats for native Virginia wildlife and farm animals. With seasonal events and programs, and space for private rentals and celebrations over 800,000 guests enjoy Maymont yearly. Since 1975, Maymont has been maintained and operated by the nonprofit Maymont Foundation, committed to creating experiences that delight, educate and inspire its guests.
The Foundation is seeking a dynamic, engaged full-time project curator to research and develop a new exhibition focusing on Maymont estate and the Jim Crow era of Virginia history and experience. As part of the African American Voices Initiative (AAVI) project, the Foundation seeks to broaden its non-accessioned collections, exhibitions and programming to support a balanced narrative in the historic core of the estate. The incumbent will report to the Senior Curator and work closely with the Director of Programming and Community Engagement, as well as in collaboration with other project team members.
Essential Functions include:
• to re-interpret the historic core as a part of the AAVI
• Research and build the collections of Jim Crow era resources through gifts, commissions, and purchases
• Work within a team to conceive exhibitions
• Participate on the internal team during the research, development and launch phase of the project
Core Competencies:
• A collaborative, team-oriented attitude
• Must be able to work in a flexible schedule that may include some weekend and evening hours supporting the project
• Ability to produce presentations and possess excellent communication skills
Education and Experience:
• Master’s degree in related field • Expertise in late 19th and early 20th century social history and demonstrated experience in collections building and curating exhibitions preferred • Expertise in public history and producing public presentations, and should have two to five years of experience in a museum setting • Candidates must be able to lift 50 pounds.
