We also use the Sotheby's catalogs on ethnographic and Precolumbian art
for insurance values for loan purposes, when we can find roughly
comparable items in them. We also have access to several decent
appraisers here in Tucson when we have to value something really
important. Harmer Johnson has a regular column in =American Indian Art
Magazine= that is also useful, though usually lacking illustrations. I
have also used Lar Hothem's price guides when I had to value something
from outside the Southwest. Personally, I've always felt uncomfortable
valuing prehistoric/archaeological items, but we really have no choice.
