The Sheboygan County Historical Society & Museum is pleased to announce the availability of a paid internship in Curation/ Collection Management for Summer 2017.
Duties/ Responsibilities:
The 2017 Intern will work with the Curator and other Museum staff in changing over a long-term exhibition. The project will include removal of the current exhibit, along with development and installation of a new exhibition for the space (approximately 125 – 200 sq. ft.). Duties will include cataloging of both current and potential artifacts, along with exhibit design, research, label writing, and fabrication.
Schedule/ Time:
The internship consists of a total of 450 hours, May - August. Hours are flexible, but must occur primarily between 8:30 AM and 5 PM, Monday thru Friday. Museum staff and the intern will determine an exact time frame and schedule. The majority of work must be performed onsite at the Museum. The internship will be paid by stipend, a total of $3600. There are no benefits or housing available.
Qualifications:
The internship is open to undergraduate or graduate students (graduates within the last year will be considered) interested in museum work, particularly curation and/ or collection management. Applicants must be comfortable working with computers, volunteers, and the public. Key skills include demonstrated ability to work independently, attention to detail, project and/or time management and excellent written and oral communication skills. The ideal candidate will also have basic graphic/ design experience, comfort with common power and hand tools, and a background (either education or work) in museum studies or history, along with basic knowledge of object handling, cataloging, and exhibit development.
The mission of the Sheboygan County Historical Society & Museum is collect, preserve and educate about the history of Sheboygan County. Embracing this mission, the museum serves the county’s 116,000 residents, along with members of the surrounding five counties and visitors from across the world through the maintenance of the four historic buildings, numerous exhibits, full day student education programs, and extensive public programming.
