I wish I could talk to the printer, but he is long dead, and the business is gone. The woman who donated the posters worked there in the 1960s and has had them at home all these years. 

With all the interesting and though-provoking responses I have received from museum-l folks, I think I will 1) ask Arnold Skolnick (the poster designer) what he can recall, 2) have a conservator examine one of the posters by whatever means are at their disposal, and 3) have a commercial printer pressperson examine the poster for clues about the process that was used.

Thank you all for your comments and questions. And yes, we have found that the inside story of an artifact’s history and anything about its creation or use that is out of the ordinary are VERY appreciated by our guests and social media followers. This will be a good story when we get to the bottom of it.
