The Robert Russa Moton Museum is looking for an energetic, visionary, and experienced professional to be its next Executive Director.
The Moton Museum, located in the former Robert Russa Moton High School in Farmville, Virginia, is a National Historic Landmark and the birthplace of the student-led phase of the modern civil rights movement. In 1951, students at Moton High School staged a walkout in protest of the overcrowded and inadequate facilities they faced; their action resulted in a court case that was included as part of the landmark 1954 Supreme Court decision Brown v. Board of Education. Prince Edward County, where the Moton Museum is located, was also the only locality in the nation to close its schools for five years to avoid school desegregation. The Moton Museum's six-gallery exhibition chronicles this history through the voices of local people and state and federal officials. The Museum is firmly rooted in the local community, while also affiliated with Longwood University, its next door neighbor and site of the 2016 U.S. Vice-Presidential debate.
