Dear colleagues,
a short heads up for those with collections that contain old fire
extinguishers:
We probably all know about the beautiful-yet-dangerous fire grenades
https://collectionsconversations.wordpress.com/2014/09/09/fire-grenades/
However, I wanted to remind you that carbon tetrachloride was used in
fire extinguishers regularily before the 1980's, especially in devices
designed for the use in cars. A trigger word might be "tetra" in the
object name.
I send this reminder because we detected small amounts of this stuff
during an air measurement in our storage. We had our extinguishers
professionally emptied a few months ago, but the measurement was taken
very close to the place this collection is stored, so chances are they
are still off-gassing.
Best wishes,
Angela
