Perhaps a sculpted (using the term loosely) ethafoam block (closed-cell polyethylene) mount would work if it can be placed on a horizontal surface, like your case.  That would take some work shaping it to get the most surface (load bearing) contact, but maybe the safest.

We have a plaster life mask to display.  It has a wire but we don't like the idea of hanging it.  We've laid it flat in a case before but would like to loft it at an angle.  Can anyone advise on the best type of mount to make for something like this?
