Exhibition Label Writing and Audience Engagement

In collaboration with the Curators Committee (CurCom) Professional Network of the American Alliance of Museums. Supported by the Education Committee (EdCom) and National Association for Museum Exhibition (NAME).
Description:
If you are learning how to write exhibition labels or want to reinvigorate your current label writing, this workshop will guide you in finding ways to share information and tell compelling stories that can help audiences make meaning of their museum experiences. This program will provide an overview of evolving mechanics and best practices for effective label writing, guidance on writing labels for audience engagement and opportunity to learn with and from experts and peers alike. Participants are asked to submit two labels and accompanying visuals in advance of the workshop for presenter and peer feedback during the program. Participants will explore the GWU Museum with an eye toward assessment of label effectiveness and tackle their own labels during the workshop.
How Will I Benefit?
By participating in this workshop, attendees will be better able to:
• Assess a variety of exhibition labels for effectiveness
• Recognize a variety of label writing styles that may fit your exhibition needs
• Engage in a thoughtful exhibition label writing process
