The International Spy Museum is converting from a for-profit institution to a 501(c)(3). The Spy Museum is also in the process of preparing to move the Museum in 2017 to a new location. The Director of Development is responsible for the creation of a new and comprehensive development program at the International Spy Museum. This includes developing a database of potential donors, planning and coordinating all fundraising programs and activities for the organization, developing the Board of Directors, overseeing corporate/foundation and individual donor relations, grant writing (and reporting), and stewardship. The Director of Development creates an annual fundraising plan and calendar. This position is regarded as part of the senior leadership team, and as such, works in concert with other department managers to best serve the needs of the institution. Key interfaces are Executive Director, COO, Controller, Department heads and the Board of Directors.
Major Responsibilities
Planning
• Create a database of potential donors.
• Develop a comprehensive yearly fundraising plan to attract donors and then renew donors with the goal of increasing annual levels of gifts.
• Develop strategies to recruit and retain individual and corporate members with distinct benefits and programming; tools include direct mail, phone campaigns, and cultivation events.
• In collaboration with other Museum departments, coordinate and implement fundraising programs for specific exhibitions and educational programming.
• Report regularly to Board of Directors on the use and impact of funds raised; work with Board on special initiatives.
Grant Writing/Administration
• Research new and appropriate funders for projects; communicate opportunities for grant funding and deadlines with other departments.
• Submit letters of inquiry and complete grant proposals to federal, state and municipal agencies; corporate foundations, and private foundations.
• Produce major gift proposals for corporations and foundations and directly solicit funding from individual donors, corporations, and other sources.
• Track and fulfill compliance requirements for all grant awards.
• Develop federal, state, municipal, corporate, and foundation grant applications.
Corporate Donor Development
• Manage the corporate development program including sponsorship opportunities.
• Increase the number of corporate members and the total dollars raised through prospect initiatives, research, and collaboration with other departments.
• Develop initial collateral materials and keep such materials current.
Relationship Management and Cultivation
• Help establish initial Board of Directors.
• Work with Board of Directors, Museum patrons, members and volunteers to assure a strong and good quality relationship in all Museum matters.
• Participate in collaborative efforts with other institutions as needed and represent the International Spy Museum in a positive, congenial, and inclusive way.
• Be a visible community representative for the Museum.
Department Administration
• Hire, supervise and evaluate second team member which could be an administrative assistant, grant writer, major gifts officer or other.
• Manage department’s annual budget, keeping expenditures within budget; communicate financial information to internal administration in a timely fashion.

Candidates must possess a Bachelor’s degree and five or more years of related professional experience. Outstanding candidates will have a proven track record of success in creating sales, preferably from high end donors and corporations. A demonstrated ability to effectively build, lead, and motivate successful sales efforts is required. Ideal candidates will have a commitment to and passion for the Spy Museum’s mission. Requires extensive networking and socializing including night and week-end meetings.
