Typically safe combination locks have a special pattern that goes with the
combination. One I'm familiar with requires you to start in a particular
direction (in my case left), go 'round several times and land on the first
number. Then you change directions and pass the second number and
continue around till you land on it again, stop. The direction changes
again and you pass the third number twice and stop on it the third time
it's under the pointer.
The last bit is where you change directions once again and turn the dial
until it stops you. This action physically moves the locking mechanism in
the safe, so you will feel some resistance.
The "left to stop" doesn't mean go left until you reach any particular
point; it just means turn it till it won't turn anymore.
Hope that helps,

Subject: [MUSEUM-L] Calling all safe-crackers!
We recently moved into a house that has an old safe in the shed. We have
the combination, but can't seem to get it open. The odd thing is that the
last step of the combination is simply "left to stop", but there is no
stop or zero or anything on the dial. Where do we stop???
Thanks.
