Discover Nikkei Web Developer

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Web Developer is responsible for the maintenance and technical development of web applications of the Discover Nikkei project at the National Museum. The Web Developer works closely with Web unit and other Museum staff to maintain the Discover Nikkei website: DiscoverNikkei.org, develops technical strategies and plans for Discover Nikkei’s web presence, and finds or develops tools to enhance its day-to-day operations. This is a temporary, part-time (24 hours per week) position with funding for one year (October 1, 2013 to September 30, 2014).
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1.	Diagnose and fix technical issues as they arise across the Discover Nikkei website.
2.	Develop new tools to better support and enhance the Discover Nikkei website/project.
3.	Assist Web team in keeping web content current.
4.	Customize and extend existing web infrastructure.
5.	Contribute to the long-term planning of web infrastructure and website architecture for the Discover Nikkei project.
6.	Maintain detailed system documentation.
7.	Provide data processing services, either manually or using custom scripts.
8.	Keep current on technical and web-related technologies and issues. Advise Museum staff on internet/web technology as needed.
9.	Staff members must be able to work with visitors of all ages to support the various events sponsored by the National Museum. Each staff member will be expected to work on a minimum of three museum-wide events per year: a)	National Museum’s Annual Gala Dinner and Silent Auction- (off-site) typically held in the Spring (April-May) b)	National Museum’s Family Festival Day- Oshogatsu Family Day (January) or Natsumatsuri Family Festival (August) c)	Target Family Free Days – Free Admission Family Days sponsored by Target held on the 2nd Saturday of the month.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Qualification Requirements: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Education: Bachelor’s degree; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience/Knowledge: least 4 years of experience working with the development of dynamic web applications. Willingness to learn and apply new skills. Ability to multi-task and prioritize is essential. Ability to work well under pressure to meet deadlines. Excellent organizational skills and be detail oriented. Strong proofreading skills. Ability to work in a fast paced team-environment, be a self-starter. Professional phone manner. Demonstrate commitment and flexibility at all times in order to ensure high quality service. Knowledge of Japanese American/Nikkei history and culture as well as the knowledge of Japanese, Spanish, and/or Portuguese a plus.
Communication: Excellent communication and negotiation skills. Must be able to provide courteous and effective service to co-workers, volunteers, and the general public. Ability to use internet-based tools to enhance collaboration with team members and website users. Ability to read and comprehend documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group format.
Computer: The following skills are required: Solid grasp of Python, PHP, SQL, XHTML, CSS, and Javascript. Knowledge of basic graphic design, page layout, and image optimization. Understanding of website architecture, usability issues, and browser peculiarities. Experience using Django or other web frameworks and customizing open-source CMS software such as MediaWiki. Experience using Git or other version control system. The following skills are considered useful and preferred: understanding of internationalization (i18n) and localization, especially Japanese; online video formats; social media integration; search engine optimization; RSS. Experience with MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint preferred, speed and accuracy are essential.
Math: Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
Reasoning: Act on own initiative to educate oneself and seek out solutions to technical issues. Must be able to comply with institutional policies and procedures. Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Perform successfully when juggling and re-prioritizing multiple assignments in a fast-paced, changing work environment. Reliable follow-through on assigned projects in a complete, well conceived, and timely manner.
