Christa,

We've had a request from a scout group that was traveling down the Yellow Breeches to the Susquehanna River. Our museum is on a college campus, the creek runs through the campus. They wanted to stay overnight and then in the morning, take part in some of our programming we have for scout groups. We were excited about this. As we began to work on the logistics, these were our obstacles:
No campfires on campus, plus our township does not allow open burning.
Bathroom facilities were another issue. The facilities on campus that are available down by the creek (for men), had one
stall and one urinal for 40 scouts.
Then we got to the insurance, the college wanted proof of insurance from the group as well as a legal document
regarding liability issues. It was a legal nightmare.

We finally said we could not accommodate them. They agreed that it was too complicated. We suggested they continue downstream about 3/4 of a mile to a township park where they would have fireplaces and more lavatory facilities. That worked for them, we went to the park and did our programs down there.

Subject: [MUSEUM-L] Scout Group Overnights

Hello All,
I have been looking into Scout Group Overnights. I have found a lot of great information on many museum websites but I have a couple of other questions.

First: Does anyone host these outside? We have a scout group that would like to camp out at our outdoor venue.
What regulations do you have in place to make sure that the outdoor area is maintained during the event? Also what insurance do you have in place for the overnight? The scout group has their own insurance but what should we make sure the institution's has? And do you have a separate fee for camping at the outside facility?

Any and all responses are welcome and can be sent to me off the list serve as well.

Thanks,
