I have prepared a list of over 200 collections of militaria in Britain
and Ireland. The list covers the major national museums for the Army,
Royal Navy, Marines and Royal Air Force, as many of the corps and
regimental collections as I can be reasonably certain of, and those
general and private museums that include significant collections of
weapons or other items of military interest. The museums are grouped
into 10 regional areas of the British Isles.
Through the courtesy of Glen Segell of Kings College London this list is
now available for ftp, or access by Gopher or World Wide Web, from
MAILBASE but be warned it is a long one: 94630 bytes of text that print
out to over 2000 lines. Instructions for accessing it:
anonymous ftp: ftp mailbase.ac.uk
login: anonymous
username: your e-mail address
set file type binary (not strictly necessary as
this is an ascii text file, not compressed)
cd /pub/lists-k-o/military-history/files
get archive.uk1
Gopher: Type=1
Name=UK-MILITARY-ARCHIVES
Host=mailbase.ac.uk
Port=70
Path=11/lists-k-o/military-history/files/archive.uk1
or follow the Gopher menus: Mailbase (UK)/ Mailbase Lists K - O/
military-history/ Other Files/ archive.uk1
WWW URL:
gopher://nisp.ncl.ac.uk/11/lists-k-o/military-history/files/archive.uk1
I hope people find this list useful. Please send me suggestions and
corrections, as I intend to keep it updated once or twice a year. In the
meantime, I am starting work on a similar list of Naval, Maritime and
Life-Boat museums in the British Isles. Happy visiting!
