Amanda, hi. I'm sure there are others who know more as I'm still a newbie
here, but also working in a small historical society museum, so have looked
for the same resources. Regarding your 2nd question, I would suggest the
following options, which we've either used or hope to make use of:
* your town's Historical Commission; they usually have a budget and a
mission that would encompass archival/preservation supplies
* your town's Community Preservation Commission, if your town and state
voted for the Community Preservation Act. Massachusetts did, as did our
town, which lets a certain % of town/city taxes and a match by the state be
used for preservation projects (and the website of past projects lists many
that included archival supplies)
*NEH's Preservation Assistance Grants (PAGs), for up to $6,000, no matching
required, geared toward small history organizations, and encompass
archival/preservation supplies, as well as storage furniture, overall
preservation assessments by experts, etc... Deadline for the next round: May
1, and you can watch a webinar that took place this past Monday on how to
apply, here:

Good luck!

Subject: [MUSEUM-L] Reference and Scholarships
I am interning at a small, historic-house museum and serving as their
collections manager this semester, attempting to put the collections
into order. I had two questions and any information would be greatly
appreciated:
1) Is there a basic reference manual for museum professionals that
explains cataloging, preservation, and exhibition methods and
procedures?
2) Are there scholarships/grants available for small, private house
museums that enable them to purchase archiving and preservation
materials?
