Internship Opportunities at the
Museum of Texas Tech University
The Museum of Texas Tech University is the university museum for Texas Tech University, a State of Texas institution of higher education, located in Lubbock, Texas. Lubbock is located in western Texas, approximately 6 hours west of Dallas, Texas, two hours south of Amarillo, Texas; and six hours east of Albuquerque, New Mexico. Travel to Lubbock may be made by car and/or by air via the Preston Smith International Airport. Southwest Airlines and other commercial carriers service the Lubbock airport.
The Museum’s strategic goals towards becoming a premier national Museum are:

The Museum supports full-time positions for graduate-level students and recent graduates of master’s degree programs who intend to pursue careers in fields of museums and heritage management. The internship program provides practical training and experience in museum and non-profit practices at an American Association of Museums accredited large university museum. The internship program is designed to expand the Museum's opportunities to offer meaningful experiences in educational programming to its graduate students, and to provide practical training and experience to enhance their classroom studies towards becoming museum professionals.
Interns are encouraged to participate in professional development programs and funding is available to support this. Such programs give the intern the opportunity to learn about current issues relevant to the museum and heritage management communities. Additionally, it provides a venue to meet and network with other emerging museum professionals as well as senior professionals. Recommended conferences include: American Association of Museums (spring) and Mountain Plains Museums Association (early fall).
Six full-time, 1-year, paid positions are available. Positions are available in; museum administration, museum education (two positions), museum/heritage education at Lubbock Lake Landmark, art, and exhibits. These full-time internships are for a period of twelve months from start date in 2012. It is expected that the person selected for each internship position will complete the full 12 months of this professional position; applicants are encouraged to seriously consider their ability to make the necessary time commitment.

Job Description: Graduate Intern, Museum Administration (paid, full-time)
Accountability: The Graduate Intern reports to the Executive Director of the Museum.
The internship in museum administration, in addition to providing quality learning experiences for the intern, is vital to the Museum’s ability to move forward in clarifying and strengthening museum policy, employee relations, and fundraising activities.
Duties are project-oriented and include:
• assisting with development and revision of administrative policy and procedures;
• assisting with development of staff/employee handbook;
• assisting in the strategic planning process and the sustainability planning process;
• researching and upgrading the Museum’s fundraising files on donors and the Museum’s alumni files; and
• developing an annual appeals packet.
Description: The Museum supports full-time positions for graduate-level students and recent graduates of master’s degree programs who intend to pursue careers in fields of museums and heritage management. The internship program provides practical training and experience in museum administration and non-profit practices at an American Association of Museums accredited large university museum. Graduate interns participate in all aspects of museum administration including planning, development, implementation, and evaluation, with a primary focus being on policy and procedure development.

Job Description: Graduate Intern, Art Division (paid, full-time)
Accountability: The Graduate Intern reports to the Curator of Art.
The internship supports a graduate level student or recent graduate of a masters program who intends to pursue a career in collection management or curatorial positions in a museum. The position will provide experience in implementing a program of preventive conservation, preservation, and documentation of the Museum’s Diamond M Collection. The collection consists of approximately 350 works of art, including paintings, works on paper, and sculptures. The term of the internship is twelve months, from April 2012 through March 2013. The internship will pay an annual stipend of $20,400 on an hourly basis ($9.81 per hour). Limited benefits may be available. Academic credit may be applicable. Limited funds are available for professional travel.
Duties and responsibilities: will include but not be limited to
- disframing works of art
- inspecting framed and unframed works of art
- updating condition reports
- reframing works of art to the museum’s standards
- rehousing works of art
- working with professional conservator to develop treatment proposals
- updating database
- writing periodic progress reports.

Job description: Graduate Intern, Museum Education (paid, full-time)
Reports to: Curator of Education, Museum of Texas Tech University
Description: The Education Division of the Museum of Texas Tech University supports one, full-time position for graduate-level students, and most recent graduates of masters degree programs, who intend to pursue careers in the fields of museum education, interpretation, and informal education.
Purpose of Internship: This internship will provide practical training and experience in diverse aspects of museum education at a museum that houses collections and exhibitions related to art, history, natural science, and natural history. The selected candidate for this internship will participate in all aspects of public interpretation including planning, development, ordering/purchasing supplies, implementation, and evaluation.
This internship would be a good fit for someone who is outgoing, personable, and able to work with individuals of diverse ages and backgrounds. Also, the ability to handle multiple projects, with overlapping deadlines, would be helpful. Creativity; energy; fast thinking; advanced computer skills; and knowledge of at least one of the content areas of the Museum would be especially valued. Also, initiative and personal responsibility, as well as the ability to demonstrate respect for colleagues, visitors, and staff will be necessary.

- Develop and teach classes and workshops, throughout the year, for area children, youth, and adult audiences.
- Assist with planning and implementation of public programming initiatives, including: workshops, tours, and outreach programs.
- Assist with improvements to traveling trunks.
- Assist in the design and preparation of materials, games, etc. to enhance traveling and permanent exhibitions.
- Assist with visitor service (registration for classes, answering phones, helping at public events, answering questions, etc.).
- Assist with other division activities as assigned.

Description: The Education Division of the Museum of Texas Tech University supports this full-time position for graduate-level students, and most recent graduates of masters degree programs, who intend to pursue careers in the fields of museum education, interpretation, and informal education.
Purpose of Internship: This internship will provide practical experience in developing materials for use in a new, docent-training program. The Museum houses collections and exhibitions related to art, history, natural science, and natural history. The selected candidate for this internship will participate in research, writing, and compilation of docent- training materials and supplies.
This internship would be a good fit for an individual who enjoys doing research, and writing, and is highly organized. The ability to work independently, handle multiple projects, and meet deadlines is necessary. A working knowledge, degree, or concentration in one of the subject areas of the Museum would be helpful, but is not mandatory. Also, initiative and personal responsibility, as well as the ability to demonstrate respect for colleagues, visitors, and staff will be necessary.
Compensation: The compensation for this internship does not include any benefits, to any applicant, either within or outside of the TTU system. University credit is available when applicable.
Responsibilities and Duties: The graduate intern will, under direction of the Curator of Education:
- Research current practices, standards and procedures for docent training; - Request materials for review from other museum docent programs; - Research, write and compile docent materials for the creation and completion of a docent training course (to be presented at a later time, as described in a three-year grant that supports this internship and the docent training program).
Note: This internship is concerned only with the development of curriculum and the compilation of training materials; this internship will not be directly involved with docents, recruitment, or training.

Description:
Lubbock Lake Landmark, an archaeological and natural history preserve and unit of the Museum of Texas Tech University, is dedicated to the preservation and stewardship of cultural and natural resources. Lubbock Lake Landmark supports full-time positions for graduate-level students and recent graduates of master’s degree programs who intend to pursue careers in fields of interpretation and non-formal education. This program provides practical training and experience in interpretation and non-formal education practices at a premiere National Historic Landmark. Graduate interns participate in all aspects of public interpretation including planning, development, implementation, and evaluation.
The internship is designed to expand the Museum’s opportunities to offer meaningful experiences in educational programming to its graduate students, and to provide practical training and experience to enhance their classroom studies towards becoming museum professionals. It also provides the opportunity to learn that the role of a museum educator extends beyond the narrow constraints of developing tours and programs for an institution. In return, additional personnel, providing the best possible educational and public programs to a growing visitor base, support the Landmark’s interpretive programs.
Education and public programming at the Lubbock Lake Landmark support the following goals:
