Hello,
To add to this, I am in the exact same boat, I have taken an additional two jobs along with the job I have in the field to make ends meet as it is part time. I was unable to find employment in the museum field after I graduated from Columbia University with a masters degree in museum anthropology. I got a job in retail to try and make ends meet and six months later found myself applying to an aquarium I had worked at in high school hoping for the best. I have been working two jobs steadily and took on a third job a few months ago as I've been unable to get more than a first interview with many places as many museums have later said they are looking for some one more local. I have not limited myself to a certain region. I have been rethinking my field and also considering other opportunities such as the military and peace corps in effort to find a sense of normal schedule.
I've been networking and I've heard from other professionals that job market is turning around so I wouldn't give up. I would suggest networking through alumni groups, as that's where I have had the best leads. Also I would consider geographical regions outside your comfort zone.
Best wishes,
Alyson Tockstein

I do still have an active social life and work in management in retail. Is that what I want? Definitely not. I intern at a museum that I love and would love to be able to work at. But can't afford to hire me so right now I am getting a little of what I love to do. What I have found is trying to stay positive even though I have applied to well over 100 positions all dealing with collections management and most with history, since that is one of my undergraduate degrees, is what keeps me going. Try to enjoy your life outside the museum an continue to visit museums. If you can't find a job in I e and have to work elsewhere then volunteer so you still get your fill. I know it sucks, trust me all my friends have full time jobs and are "living the life" but I have to believe that my time will come. Also my one friend keeps telling me to look at higher Ed jobs like academic advising if you have a masters. Just a thought. Good luck and keep your head up!
